In this weeks lecture we learned about digital imaging and learned about bitmaps, bitmap image formats, vectors and photoshop.

In the lab we worked on using photoshop on the apple mac’s for the first time.

Main points on Bitmaps;

  • Are made up of small squares or pixels in a grid.
  • Each pixel has its own colour.
  • The pixels form an image.
  • The resolution of the image is measured in dots per inch or (DPI).

Bitmaps come in the following formats;

GIF (Graphic Interchange Format);

  • Max of 256 colours.
  • Can be animated.
  • Allows transparency.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

  • Millions of colours.
  • Ideal for photographs.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics;

  • PNG-8 is similar to GIF and PNG-24 is simular to JPEG.
  • Designed for the internet.

Main points on Vectors

  • Vectors are not made of pixels but consists of points, lines and curves.
  • The advantage is the file size is small.
  • (Infinate resolution) – can be scaled up without loosing the quality of the image.
  • They are ideal for photographic images.
